Light & Power – Repairs and Alterations (AS/NZS 3000:2007)

In 1984 the company was founded on providing electrical contracting repairs and installations for local commercial clients. Since then our expertise in this discipline has broadened, allowing us to take on state wide projects from simple system modifications to full fit outs. We can provide all types of maintenance/breakdown services through to large installation work.

We have state wide maintenance and breakdown contracts with respected clients. KPI site attendance times are crucial in keeping networks operating.

All work is carried out by our in-house team of skilled electricians to Australian Standards (AS/NZS 3000:2007).

Electrical Services for Data and Fibre Optics

During the past 10 years Australia experienced rapid growth in the use of technology in the workplace. Phones went from analogue to digital; computer networks went from 10mbps to 500mbps; and modems went from 28.8kbps dial-up to dedicated high-speed access.

Mainphase matched this growth. We support our customers in providing electrical services which include installing the cabling infrastructure to run both emerging and future technologies.

As that growth has stepped up to another level, Mainphase has increased the scope of services offered to our customers to include such services as fibre optic systems.

In addition to providing new cabling and services, Mainphase has developed an extensive Electrical Services Department that focuses on helping customers get the most out of existing cabling. We assist with existing conditions, alterations, additions, moves and changes and recommend ways to perform these changes with the least cost and greatest flexibility for future use.

Mainphase has also worked at combining technologies for our customers in order to cut installation costs and increase flexibility.

With the continued development of high performance networks and the advent of new technologies including Voice over IP, Gigabit and Ethernet, the need for correctly installed future-proofed structured cabling systems is now greater than ever. Today’s competitive environment demands that networks offer exceptional performance and reliability with minimal down time.

At Mainphase, we are able to satisfy these needs. Our Electrical Services Department provide structured copper and fibre network installations, singlemode and multimode fibre optic testing and end-to-end loss testing of fibre installation up to 1625nm, based upon the latest Australian Standards. Every system is tested and comes complete with a written report as proof of compliance.

As with all Mainphase installations, systems are installed and tested utilizing the latest equipment available.

Fussion/mechanical splicers, Optical Time Domain Reflectometers (OTDR’s), Traffic & Fault Finding testers and Optical Light Sources are regularly calibrated and renewed to provide accurate information.

Mainphase Staff are continually trained and certified by the manufacturers of the solutions we support, as well as through courses offered by RMIT University.

Today’s competitive environment demands that networks offer exceptional performance and reliability with minimal down time. The same performance and reliability should also be expected by the Service Technicians installing them.

Electrical Testing and Tagging

Appliance Testing (AS/NZS 3760:2003)

Employers are obligated to ensure the workplace is safe for its employees. Most faulty appliances have the potential to cause electric shock, damage by electrical fire and worst of all – ‘Death’ through electrocution.

Electrical Testing & Tagging is the safe checking of electrical appliances, in accordance with the Australian Standards necessary for the safety of all persons using the equipment. This Standard allows proper protocols to provide employers and employees a cost effective approach to safety without jeopardizing personnel safety or involving excessive equipment downtime.

We as commercial electrical contractors, receive numerous calls about the requirements for the inspection and testing of electrical appliances in accordance with the code. Electrical Testing & Tagging is covered by the following activities:

  • Formal visual inspections
  • Combined inspections and tests
  • Applying an identification tag to the tested appliance
  • Providing a register of data for keeping track of regular test and OH&S auditing purposes.

Our recommendation is that regular checks are to be undertaken in accordance with when the equipment is taken into use and during use. Any faults should be reported to the management repaired and/or the equipment taken out of use immediately.

To comply with the Australian Standard, appliances require testing on regular intervals. The intervals vary depending on the industry. For example,

  • The Building and Construction industry require testing of appliances every three months.
  • General office equipment requires testing of appliances every five years.

All tests should be undertaken by appropriately trained technicians who can recognize the varying applications, have a clear understanding of the Australian Standard and utilise approved test equipment. This test equipment should be subjected to routine calibration to ensure its accuracy is maintained.

Mainphase ELectrical Services make it easy for you to fulfill your appliance test and tag obligations under the Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) Act. If required we can even repair the majority of appliance faults while on site to prevent operational loss.

Residual Current Device (RCD) Testing (AS/NZS 3190:2002)

What is a Residual Current Device (RCD)?

A Residual Current Devices (RCD) & Earth Leakage Circuit Breakers (ELCB) more commonly known as “Safety Switches” are designed to switch off power when it detects an in-balance commonly of 30mA (milliamps) between the active and neutral conductor. These in-balances are commonly caused by current leakage through earth. This leakage can be caused via a faulty appliance or through the body of a person accidentally touching an energized piece of equipment. RCD/ELCB’s are designed to disconnect power to the circuit when a difference of 30mA is detected.

In simple terms RCD’s & ELCB's are designed to prevent people from receiving an electric shock and/or electrocution when operating electric devices. This disconnection or tripping of these breakers should happen without due delay, if the RCD/ELCB takes to long to trip the results could be fatal. Hence the necessity for regular testing to ensure proper operation for safety to all personnel.

Testing of Residual Current Devices (RCD)

Regular testing of fixed and portable RCD’s is required by a registered electrical contractor to ensure their operation should leakage to earth occur in the workplace. This protects lives.

Experienced Mainphase technicians / electricians will perform both a 6 month "push button" test and 12 month “millisecond" test in accordance with Australian Standards to ensure that these devices are functioning within their design parameters and appropriate standards.

The information from these tests shall be recorded and reported to you via a “on site” logbook and electronic ‘soft’ copy for OH&S auditing processes.

RCD/ELCB’s can save lives – Regular testing of these devices ensures they do.

Electrical Safety

Overview

Each year, many accidents at work involving electric shock or burns are reported to Energy Safe Victoria. A large proportion of these are fatal. It is essential to carry out a Risk Assessment in order to identify what needs to be done. This is a legal requirement for all risks at work.

The rules relating to enrolment include a new criterion which requires that all Approved Contractors/Service Providers, regardless of the number of employees, have a written occupational, health and safety policy statement and carry out risk assessments as appropriate.

Regulations require employers and the self-employed to assess the risks to which their employees, themselves and others may be exposed as a result of the way they carry out their work.

Mainphase has put in place strict guidelines and procedures to maintain a high standard of risk aversion. More information and current policy downloads can be found under the OH&S link concerning:
